The Rejoice Dance Company has been running for the past 30 years. Christian’s, with a love for dance, are invited to join from all denominations to take this form of worship out, in ministry. Most of the members have had no previous dance training but are dedicated to the regular classes and work hard to achieve a high standard of excellence in this ministry. They are booked for different church functions most weekends in the year throughout the Durban area. The main emphasis of “Rejoice” is its Messianic character: i.e. the group chooses mostly Jewish flavoured music and costumes, and find the Israeli steps and culture a very comfortable and biblical basis to work from. They encourage churches to celebrate the “Lord's Feasts” as set out in Leviticus, discovering the roots and richness of their heritage therein. They have taken dancers to Israel before and were also involved in setting up a dance group in Russia recently. Other countries they have visited and danced in include Greece and Malaysia.

The visual art of dance has been reawakened in the life of the church. For so many years dance was considered “carnal” or “irreverent” by many in the church. It is worth reading the account of worship in David’s Tabernacle. Some still see this ministry as the dancers drawing attention to themselves. But there are those who truly experience the touch of God through the medium of Christian dance. As with music, the beauty of movement can break down the barriers we often find around our hearts and emotions. Then the Holy Spirit can minister to us when these blocks are removed.

One current issue in all of our lives at present is the future of Jerusalem. The whole world is watching those who seem to have the deciding powers regarding her position. It is a relief to know that our God has already written her future. But, what a wonder to realise that He is using those who will stand with Israel in these days, praying for her protection and peace. In Isaiah 62 verses 6 and 7, we read these words “I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.” Oh, to be working with the Lord, in these days, with His agenda!

Isaiah 62:1 reads “For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her righteousness shines out like the dawn”. As the Rejoice Dance Company we believe we have been called to “not remain silent” and therefore we take our stand with the other “watchmen” throughout the centuries and today’s world. Our way is just a little more colourful and visual.
